People who live in mountainous regions have historically shared some common characteristics: hearty, rugged, self-sufficient, and sometimes, due to the nature of their surroundings, somewhat isolated from the rest of the world. This unit considers both current and historic cultures that have lived in highland regions, drawing comparisons and contrasts among their economic, cultural, and civic lives.
