Islands and Coast
Throughout history, cultures have always been influenced by their proximity to water, and waterways have historically provided easy routes for the movement of people, information, and goods. Cultures that have developed on islands and coastlines have often attempted to balance their tendencies to look inward, as a result of their isolation, and outward, as a result of their ease of access to transportation. This unit compares several cultures that have developed along the water and considers how transportation, commerce, and language have shaped their identities.
